If you're looking to get your noir adventuring on with a side of pop culture laughs The Darkside Detective may be what you're looking for

Thus far in the Switch’s short life, I’ve been surprised by the number of titles from the resurgent classic adventure genre as well as their quality. The fact that the Switch is both portable and has a touchscreen may have a lot to do with this; in many regards it may be the perfect console system for enjoying them. Adding to the list we now have The Darkside Detective, bringing with it a host of quirky characters, pop culture references, and stylistic pixel art.

As is the case with any game in this genre, the majority of the time is spent exploring rooms, poring over anything that can be clicked on, then figuring out how to solve a variety of puzzles requiring objects and your wits to solve. Humor is commonly derived from the dialogue options and the descriptions of the items. Specifically in the case of Detective, an abundance of jokes involve movies and television and while it all worked for me, I’ll acknowledge my age may have helped some of these connect. Younger gamers, in particular, may find some of it a bit more hit and miss.

Over the course of the six cases, the first one being a bit shorter and serving more as a tutorial, there’s good news and bad news. The bad news is that, for the most part, each case lasts about an hour or two, depending on how quickly you read and can figure out the puzzles. The good news is that in general I’d consider the actions and puzzles, to be sensible so there’s a good chance you’ll be able to get through the game without heavy use of a guide. In a few cases I was thrown off only by the sequence I had to complete things in, not so much by not having the right idea, but in general I had a good time.

What it comes down to for a game like this is whether you’re a fan of the genre and what your expectations are for the length of the experience. I’d say that Darkside Detective isn’t the best adventure game on the system but it holds up well in the middle of the pack. The greater the breadth of your pop culture appreciation the more likely I’d say the jokes and references are to connect for you. In general, the game is riding on that understanding. It’s a worthwhile romp for genre fans who’d like a chance to enjoy five chapters with a reasonable length, have a few laughs, and not being quite as frustrated as with other games in the genre on the Switch.

I played this on PC and really liked it. I think the pacing was really good. The chapters were too long and the story moved at a nice clip. The game was a perfect length too.

You get this by reading all the books in the library.
You need to click/read the books
-on each of the shelves (at least 7 times each) on each floor exluding the topmost.
-in the unsorted pile of books (3-4 books there) on the top floor
-piled up on tables
-in each row (A-Z) in the horror shelf multiple times until they repeat
-Once you open the shelf via the lever, read the book in the center
-on the opened shelf, right of the glowing book.
-near the skull (5-7)
-you get as inventory (They begin with L & T)

Important! You need to read the books in the DIY section twice. Once when Gail is present, and once when she’s not. Also, the pile of books on the librarian’s table can be read only when she’s gone to the kid’s section.

Toilet Humour
You need to listen to all the three jokes the toilet makes. Reinitiate conversation with it thrice to trigger this.

Look Skyward!
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Nah, it’s probably a dragon! Once you come outside in the Darkside, you’ll notice something flying in the purple background (Sky) near the disguise shop. Click on the creature to unlock the achievement.

Master hacker
You need to complete the virus puzzle in three moves. In the base state, tap bottom-right > top-center > bottom-left to complete it in three moves.

Case 4

Brickman Super Fan
Listen to all of Brickman’s radio shows. There are 4 different shows he presents at various stages during the case. Check the radio in the beginning for the weather broadcast before you leave the room. Make sure to check the office once in a while and tap on the radio. After stunning each Gremlin, check your office. Note: Soon after Dooley breaks the urn, check the radio. That’s the last show he airs.

Karma
Use the laxatives in the coffee and give it to McKing.

Case 5

Camp Counsellor
During the course of the case, Davon’s dad, being a helicopter parent, will call 5 times to check on him. You need to pick all 5 of them. Be sure to check back at the main cabin once you perform a milestone (getting an important item).

mooR deR
You need to enter the cursed cabin in the dark woods. A red window appears once you dismiss Larry & Barry. I am not sure of what exactly causes it to appear, but this happens before putting together the tinfoil hat and after you take the picture of ‘Big foot’ and pick up Devon’s dad’s calls at least twice. Any help on the exact conditions is appreciated.

Complete the case.

Case 6

Classic Dooley
This one was very difficult to figure out. You need to use the hammer that you obtain from the construction workers on ALL things before you use it on the sewer gate. This includes the ladder, yourself, on the water, on the ‘Move right’/’Move left’ indicators, etc. Basically anything that pops up with a white label.

Darkside Detective
Complete the case.

Miscellaneous

Dumpster Diver
You need to inspect 10 bins. This include the dustbins at the office, the tin bin in front of the antique shop, the bin on the train platform, etc. Not that hard to miss if you inspect everything you come across 😉

Hot Rod
Inspect 8 cars. Make sure you inspect your car in each case when it begins. There’s two more in Case 4 in the garage and one more (the black one) in Case 6.

Light Reader
Occassionally, while inspecting bins (like the tin bin in front of the antique shop), you’ll pull out a magazine. There’s one in each case. Read all to unlock this one.
